Garlic is obtained from the bulb of the plant allium sativum. It is used as a flavouring agent for cooking, but also has medicinal properties.  It has enjoyed a reputation as a miracle healer. Garlic when consumed, one-half to one clove per day, reduces total serum cholesterol by 9%. In a German study published on Atherosclerosis subjects who consumed garlic everyday had upto 18% less plaque in their arteries.
Garlic had been in use before the antibiotic era in the treatment of bronchitis, brochiedasis and lung abscess. Garlic juice diluted with water has sometimes been used as lotion for cleaning septic wounds.
Garlic inhibits platelet aggregation. Clotting time and fibrinolytic activity are considerably delayed after eating raw garlic.

What makes these foods so potent?
  • The above have been shown to protect brain cells from the onslaughts of ageing
  • Blueberries (Jamun as commonly known in India) and strawberries are rich in anthocyanins, formidable antioxidants in deep red and purple pigments.
  • Studies suggest anthocyanins may protect the neurons ability to respond to chemical messengers; they also seem to discourage blood clots from forming.
  • Spinach is a antioxidant powerhouse, bursting with betacarotene, vitamin C and folic acid. All three foods contain other compounds that keep blood vessels supple and help transport nerve impulses more efficiently.
  • These substances almost certainly get their oomps from teamwork, which is why researchers advise eating the foods rather than popping a supplement made from them.
 
Cruciferous Vegetables (Broccolli, Cabbage, Cauliflower and Brussels sprouts etc) Cancers are probably caused by saturated fatty diets which curtail the bodies fighting immunity. The best weapon against cancer is - HOLD YOUR BREATH - Cabbage, cauliflower, broccolli, raddish, turnip and brussels sprouts - long classified as ANTI CANCER FOODS. 
  • Rich in Nitrogen compounds called indoles. Indoles act to make estrogen less potent and thus may reduce the risk of breast cancer. 
  • These veggies also include another anti-cancer chemical sulforaphane. Sulforaphane may neutralise cancer causing chemicals that damage cells; also interferes with tumour growth.
  • There is plenty of fibre in the above veggies too, which is another cancer fighter specially of digestive system by inhibiting growth of small lumps which can become cancerous.
  • These vegetables are also good sources of folic acid ( a B vitamin), vitamin C, fibre, and carotenoids - all cancer fighters
 
Fenugreek seeds (Methi) contains an alkaloid called trigonelline which has been shown to lower blood sugar and prevent diabetes induced cataract. It also lowers cholesterol and triglycerides.  Turmeric (Haldi) It acts as a carminative and inhibits gastric secretions. Even in high dilutions it has anti bacterial properties, and it has therefore been applied for cleaning wounds
Fish: The top heart disease fighter. The theory is that fish oil lowers cholesterol and triglycerides, makes blood less sticky, and perhaps even decreases blood pressure. Beyond the heart benefits it' s claimed that fish can alleviate  rheumatoid arthritis and other auto immune disorders. It is also claimed that fish can reduce the size of tumours by keeping tumour cells in control. Oily fish helps block breast cancer because omega-3 acid content boosts the immune system ability to respond to developing tumours. Citrus fruits Oranges, grapefruits, lemons, limes etc. are one of the most concentrated sources of vitamin C. Vitamin C increases the number of chemical messengers - specially interferon - which are vitally important in the process of fighting infection.
  • Antibiotics are powerless against cold which is caused by a virus. A three day high anti oxidant diet may help zap it out.
  • D - limonene, in citrous skin, can leach into the juice and may detoxify cancer promoters.
  • Carotenoids may also fight cancer which is present in the above foods.
  • Another phytochemical - flavonoids act as antioxidant and may inhibit blood clotting.
  • These fruits are rich in vitamin C (a powerful antioxidant) and fibre.
Tomato contains a substance called lycopene which is heavy-weight anti cancer agent and may prevent stomach and lung cancer. High intake, specially of cooked or processed tomatoes, may reduce risk of prostate cancer. Soy ( also a legume), Soyabean, soyamilk, tofu  More specially - BEAT BREAST CANCER. 
  • breast cancer can occur because of  excess of hormone estrogen. That is why soyabean  (nutri-nuggets, tofu), which lowers estrogen levels, is good for you.

TEA - protector against heart disease and cancer
  • Antioxidants in tea may help keep cholesterol from clogging arteries and protect against cell damage that causes cancer of skin, gastro intestinal tracts and other areas of the body.
  • Green tea contains the ingredients EGG (Epigallocathechin 3 gallate) that binds with and inhibits the action of cancer promoting enzyme called Urokinase.
  • Tea also contains magnesium which acts up the activity of immune cells. 

THE BEST WAY TO DRINK TEA

  • White sugar and lemon are not thought to effect the antioxidants in tea, milk may.
  • It appears protein in milk could potentially bind two antioxidants and render them unavailable to the body.
  • Tea must be steeped for three minutes for all of the antioxidants.
Green Leafy Vegetables and yellow fruits (Papaya, mango, methi leaves, spinach, amaranth) 
  • Help in strengthening  the immune system.

  • The above fruits and vegetables are also rich in vitamin C, other vitamins, minerals, and fibre.
Whole grains - whole wheat, oats, barley, ragi, jowar, bajra, brown rice.

  • Turpenoids and phytic acids may help reduce heart disease and cancer risks.
