Arrhythmia

Arrhythmia involves the conditions dysrhythmias, abnormal heart rhythms, bradycardia or tachycardia.

An arrhythmia is a disorder of the heart rate (pulse) or heart rhythm, such as beating too fast (tachycardia), too slow (bradycardia), or irregularly.

The electrical impulse that signals your heart to contract begins in the sino-atrial node (also called the sinus node or SA node). This is your heart's natural pacemaker. The signal travels through the atria (upper two heart chambers) to reach AV node and finally passes to ventricles (lower two heart chambers).

Arrhythmias are caused by problems with the heart's electrical conduction system.

When an arrhythmia is present, your heartbeat may be:
• Too slow (bradycardia)
• Too quick (tachycardia)
• Irregular

Problems can occur anywhere along this conduction system, causing various arrhythmias.

The risk of getting a tachycardia or bradycardia varies greatly, depending on:
Blood chemistry imbalances, such as abnormal potassium levels
• Cardiomyopathy -- a weakening or a change in the heart muscle
• Heart failure
• Overactive thyroid gland
• Past heart attack
• Excessive consumption of caffeine or drugs like cocaine.

Common symptoms include chest pain, fainting, fast or slow heartbeat (palpitations), light-headedness, dizziness, paleness, shortness of breath, skipping beats - changes in the pattern of the pulse and sweating.

Dietary Modification in ARRTHYMIA
*Limiting the intake of fast absorbing carbohydrates. Instead one should have whole grain cereals, fruits and vegetables particularly low-glycemic foods.
*Considerable amounts of protein to be included particularly lean meat or pulses and legumes.
*Magnesium and potassium are considered important as these relax the heart muscles and control the rhythmic movement of the heart. Include lots of spinach lettuce, cucumbers, pumpkin, watercress, peas, radish, plum, almonds, celery, melons, orange, pineapple, papaya, banana, raspberries, beans, onion, lentils, avocados, grapes, apricots, peaches, pears, etc.
*Avoid caffeinated drinks and alcohols.
