Chinese Toffee Apples-
Batter fried apples served dipped in caramel sauce

Preparation Time : 10 minutes
Cooking Time : 15 minutes

       Ingredients How to?

  • Apples - 4 medium
  • Corn flour/ corn starch - 4 tablespoons
  • Refined flour (maida) - 1 cup
  • Baking powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Oil to deep fry
  • Butter - 1 tablespoon
  • Sugar - 1/2 cup
  • Sesame seeds (til), toasted - 1 tablespoon

  1. Peel, core and cut apples into quarters and cut each quarter lengthwise in half. Coat apple segments thoroughly in two tablespoons of corn flour, shaking off excess.
  2. Sieve refined flour, remaining corn flour and baking powder into a bowl. Gradually stir in one and quarter cup of water to make a smooth batter.
  3. Heat sufficient oil in a wok, dip the apple segments into the batter and deep fry for about a minute or until golden brown, turning them occasionally. Drain on an absorbent paper and keep warm.
  4.  Heat butter in a pan with two tablespoons of water and sugar. Continue cooking until sugar melts and turns light golden brown.
  5.  Remove from heat and dip the fried apple pieces in the hot caramel.
  6. Sprinkle sesame seeds and dip in iced water to harden the crust.

    Remove immediately and serve.
